Howdy Folks. Time for a June fishing update and I believe this time as much as any in recent history, we must start with the weather. We are in the midst of an exceptional drought in our area of the southeast as well as most of the Rocky Mountain west has not received the snowfall which they depend on. Although we have had some recent rain here that helps the upper level soil moisture, there is more needed to get our reservoirs to summer pool. As we go into summer, this is making for lower stream flows on most of our rivers originating from the southern Appalachians. Lower flows on these rivers can really put a damper on fishing and floating.
However, the Cumberland River tailwater originating from Lake Cumberland flourishes with these lower flow rates. Lake Cumberland is the largest reservoir east of the Mississippi River and within easy striking distance to most of our southeastern anglers. We have already begun fishing the Cumberland this year and it is excellent with great flow rates, good water clarity, and the beginning of summertime mayfly and caddis hatches. I fully expect the Cumberland River to be THE place to fly fish for trout for the next four to five months. For those of you who have yet to fish with us on the Cumberland River, this summer is the time to check it out. For those of you who fish the American west in the summertime, this may be the year to try out an incredible fishery a little closer to home. These are fresh pics from some of our recent trips on the Cumberland River. We currently have two open dates remaining for June; Friday and Saturday, June 19th and 20th.
